1.Overview


Traditional solar street lights can only be controlled one-to-one. But for big solar street light projects, if we want to control all the solar street lights on a computer or mobile phone at one time, what should we do? It's simple, use IoT solar street lights.


IoT is short for the Internet of things. Compared with the traditional solar street light, the IoT solar street light control system does extra two jobs: one is to record the working data, and the other is to transmit the working data to the server.


We can use Lora/Zigbee technology to build a local area network(LAN) and transmit information between lights, then use the concentrator to collect light information and transmit it to the server through 4G/5G networks. Or we can use 4G/5G networks to transmit directly. Finally, the data is displayed on the computer or mobile phone, then we can see and control the working status of each light.

4.Benefits of IoT smart solar street light


a. Real-time monitoring and feedback

You can check the solar street light working condition on the computer or phone, and our system will send the warning information if the solar street light does not work well. So you can know which light is broken and the possible reasons. Will save lots of maintenance fees.


b. Brightness adjustment and energy saving

For example, We need the solar light to be turned on earlier in winter but later in summer, then we just need to change the working time on the computer.

Road A has heavy traffic but road B only has a few cars after 10 pm, we want road B dim to 50% output to save energy, how to do? We can set all solar street lights on road B to work with 50% output after 10 pm on our system.


c. Smart solar street light alarm function

IoT solar street light provides an alarm function, and real-time data on the platform can provide for analysis.


5.Two solutions to make the IoT solar street light


The key point for the IoT solar street light control system is to collect and transmit the working data and commands between the solar street light and server. Soaring Lighting provides two ways to do it:


a. Solar controller with Lora/Zigbee module + Concentrator with SIM card

This is the first generation of IoT solar street light control system. In this system, each solar controller is built in a Lora/Zigbee module, so a local area network is formed and Lights will transmit working data to the concentrator by Zigbee/Lora signal, then the concentrator with a SIM card will send all the information to the server by 4G/5G network.


In this system, only the concentrator need a SIM card, and usually, a concentrator can control 50-150pcs of solar street light, so it saves lots of SIM card fee and the network fee.


But Lora/Zigbee signal is not stable like the 4G/5G network. If the distance for the street light is not reasonable, some lights may be disconnected after installation.


However, if the contractor have an engineer who knows how the Lora/Zigbee work, it will be good to use this solution.

b. Solar controller with internet module

This is the new solution. In this system, each solar controller has a SIM card in-built, so they can transmit the signal to the server directly. Since the 4G/5G network is more stable than the Lora/Zigbee, this IoT solar street light will work better.


Due to the low SIM card fees and network fees, this solution is widely used in China solar street lighting projects.
